Georgia football made a Lone Star statement by defeating the No. 1 Longhorns.

Georgia football made a Lone Star statement by defeating the No. 1 Longhorns.

AUSTIN, Texas — In 2021 and 2022, Georgia football lived by the motto: “You’re either elite or you’re not.”

This Bulldogs team looked elite again on Saturday night.

It showed that a defense with first-round NFL talent in Jalon Walker, Malachi Starks and a healthier Mykel Williams might have a hard time moving the ball.

Texas found the No. 1 Longhorns falling from the ranks of undefeated in a 30-15 loss to the Bulldogs.

Underestimate Georgia and you might look stupid.

“Nobody really gave us a chance,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart, whose team was ranked No. 4 in the Coaches Poll and No. 5 in the AP Poll, said after his 100th throw.th career victory. “Everyone doubted us.”

Well, everyone on ESPN’s College GameDay picked Texas to win at the end of the show in Austin.

That included Nick Saban, who flipped a coin to choose between former Alabama assistants Smart and Texas’ Steve Sarkisian.

“Our entire program was questioned,” Smart said. “Did you watch the show this morning? I didn’t do it because I was in meetings, but I got 8,000 messages.”

Georgia didn’t secure a spot in the 12-team playoff before more than 105,000, including NBA star Kevin Durant, but the Bulldogs (6-1, 4-1 SEC) are in a strong position with five regular-season games left and wins on the road against top 10 teams Texas and Clemson.

The SEC has no undefeated players, and the SEC’s six teams are now 6-1 overall.

“I told our kids it wasn’t going to be easy,” Smart said. “Win or lose, we weren’t out of it, and that’s still the case, we’re not in it. It’s one of those things we need to continue to improve.”

Even if Georgia loses 5-2 to Ole Miss and 6-1 at home to Tennessee, ESPN’s playoff forecaster gives Georgia an 89% chance of making the playoffs as a 9-3 team.

Georgia won that night with a total of 283 yards of offense.

That’s actually 21 more yards than Kentucky had in the 13-12 win.

“We didn’t flinch,” Smart said. “You will not flinch after being in these battles.”

Smart mentioned the Kentucky win and Alabama loss, which also happened overnight.

Georgia didn’t look like a team going to go down when Carson Beck threw two interceptions in the first quarter.

In total, Beck threw three interceptions and was 23 of 41 for 175 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions.

He’s made all eight interceptions in his last four games. Before this season, Beck had eight career interceptions.

“Our team has demonstrated great resilience in overcoming many obstacles, including some of our own making,” Smart said. “Our inability to catch the ball is almost comical.”

Smart defended Beck, saying Georgia had 8 or 9 downs.

Where did Brock Bowers and Ladd McConkey go? (We know Las Vegas and Los Angeles).

“We don’t have the same guys, and he carries that burden,” Smart said.

Georgia has an open date on its schedule before its Nov. 2 matchup with Florida.

“Overall, I think offensively we can be a lot better,” Beck said. “To see that we can go out here and win and not play our best game, in my opinion, to be able to come out here with a win is a huge thing. This is a testament to our team.”

Georgia has won its last 52 games against teams not named Alabama. The score is 1-2 against the Crimson Tide during that stretch.

Georgia was an underdog for the first time since the 2021 season opener against Clemson. The Bulldogs also won that top-5 matchup.

The Longhorns were favored 3½ at the start, up from 5 on Friday.

“You try not to focus on the outside noise,” said running back Trevor Etienne, who rushed for 87 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. – But you see it.

The millions of people who tuned in to watch the Georgia-Texas game saw that the Bulldogs may not be quite playing at the level of their back-to-back title teams in 2021 and 2022, but they are still elite enough in this wide-open season that, maybe, just maybe, we’ll win it all again.
