According to George Brandeis, former British High Commissioner, Australians are satisfied with King Charles as their monarch and support for the republic is at a historic low.

In an interview with GB News during King Charles and Queen Camilla’s royal tour of Australia, Brandis described the republic movement as “weak”. The tour, which began with the couple’s arrival in Sydney on Friday, marks the first visit by a reigning monarch since 2011.

The royal couple were greeted by local officials and children who presented flowers. Their visit includes a busy program, including public events such as barbecues and visits to iconic landmarks.

Brandeis emphasized the positive reception, saying: “King Charles comes here as the King of Australia, and not just as the King of England. Australians recognize him as their king and are generally happy about it.” He highlighted the strong connection that Australians feel with King Charles, citing his time spent at school in Australia as a teenager, which the king often remembers fondly.

“This is his 17th visit to the country and Australians feel a sense of closeness and warmth towards him. Even though he lives in England, many consider him ‘one of us’ because of his attachment to the country,” Brandis added.

He predicted there would be enthusiastic crowds when the King and Queen visited key sites such as the Sydney Opera House and the Australian War Memorial, reflecting the deep and mutual affection between King Charles and the Australian people.
