FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) – One local woman is trying to support those still in need in western North Carolina after Hurricane Helen hit nearly a month ago.

Susan Shiel of Fargo lives at Bethany Nursing Home and is passionate about helping others.

Sheel says she is a reminder that retirement can be a time of new purpose and believes in using your experiences to work with others for a greater purpose.

“It’s just the fact that when I saw the destruction in North Carolina on TV, I just thought, ‘You know, we have to do something,'” Scheel says.

One by one, Sheel challenged herself to take action, contacting local churches, businesses and various organizations throughout the Fargo-Moorhead area to gather supplies.

She collects everything from blankets and pajamas to cleaning supplies.

“I am a person who believes that you can’t just watch and say how sad it is and how difficult it is. Do something,” Scheel says.

However, Sheel says if you want to help, there are very specific needs.

“And one of the most important things for humans is water. Water, they need water,” Scheel says.

Because of her deep commitment, Sheel is excited to provide assistance to those affected by the hurricane.

“I love shopping, but I prefer shopping for others. I have been lucky in life and I try to share that with others,” says Sheel.

If you’d like to help, you can drop off items at Grace Pointe Apartments on 42nd Street in Fargo. And if you want to know more, Shiels will host a meeting tomorrow and again on October 29 in the apartment building’s community room.
