Newton County School District hosts community conversation and scholarships

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – The Newton County School District invited parents, students and community members to the CTE building to learn more about the purpose of the facility.

People were able to tour classrooms, talk to teachers and even talk to the principal during a roundtable discussion at the Newton County Career and Technical Education Center.

State Treasurer David McRae even showed up at the event. He was there to see the progress the school district had made, but he was also there to give out $2,000 in scholarships to the students in attendance.

“The average child goes to school with about $35,000 in debt, plus college, Mississippi College and career savings. In Mississippi, we want to not have kids, go to college and graduate with debt, and get them on the right path. He’s their best striker,” McRae said.

“We’ve been working on the strategic plan for about a year now, and this is our big presentation to the community and parents to show what our vision is and what our future plans are for the Newton County School District,” he said. Superintendent Brooke Sibley.

The scholarship winners were Anna Boudreaux and Mackenzie Platt.
