Bengaluru building collapse: death toll rises to 5, D.K. Shivakumar directed officials to identify illegal constructions | Bangalore

The death toll from a building collapse in Bengaluru reportedly rose to five on Wednesday morning. NDRF and SDRF teams have been carrying out rescue operations since Tuesday evening as it is feared that at least 17 people are trapped under the rubble.

According to reports, more than 10 people were rescued from the collapsed building, five of them were hospitalized with serious injuries. Rescue teams have been working for the past 16 hours to clear the rubble and identify those trapped inside.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar visited the accident site on Tuesday evening and said action will be taken against all illegal constructions in Bengaluru. He said: “I was told it was illegal construction without the proper permission. Strict action will be taken against the builder, contractor and all involved. I have ordered officials to identify such structures throughout the city and stop them immediately.”

A seven-storey building collapsed in Bengaluru’s Hennur area around 4 pm on Tuesday. One person was initially declared dead and his body was recovered from the wreckage. Police identified the deceased as 26-year-old Armaan, who had come to Bengaluru from Bihar. All the people trapped inside the building are construction workers who lived under the building.

It is also believed that heavy rain across the city was one of the reasons why the building collapsed like a deck of cards. Bengaluru received 186.2 mm of rain, which is considered the highest single-day rainfall in the last 25 years. The northern part of the city faced huge fires after roads were flooded and traffic came to a standstill. Many apartments in Yelahanka were under water after rain caused havoc in the city.
