Launceston and the Tamar Valley have been ranked among the world’s must-see destinations.

The Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2025 list recognizes the Tasmania region as the only Australian region to feature in the top five must-see destinations of the year.

Launceston and the Tamar Valley came in at number 4 on the esteemed list, sitting just below the Lowcountry and Coastal Georgia in South Carolina in the US, the Terai in Nepal and Chiriqui in Panama.

Lonely Planet senior director of global trade sales and marketing Chris Zeicher praised the region’s culinary offerings, calling them “all about food, great food.”

“We love Lunny Green… it offers a wonderful mix of old and new, and I am particularly fascinated by its magnificent 19th-century industrial architecture,” he said.

Lonely Planet praised Launceston for its culinary offerings and industrial architecture.

Zeicher suggested an itinerary that included a morning Sweetbrew beer, a stroll through the city’s historic streets, lunch at Josef Chromy Wines, and an afternoon exploration of Cataract Gorge.

“The inclusion of Launceston and the Tamar Valley in this year’s Best Regions list highlights why domestic travelers should reconsider Australia’s obvious holiday destinations,” he said.

Launceston and the Tamar Valley have been named fourth in Lonely Planet’s Best Travel 2025 list.

Tasmania’s Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Jeremy Rockliffe said the listing was an “incredible achievement” for Tasmania.

“While Tasmania’s stunning and diverse regions set us apart as a tourism destination, it is the tourism and hospitality industry and our communities that provide memorable experiences, food and drink that showcase the best of what our regions have to offer,” he said.

“I encourage Tasmanians, Australians and people from around the world to travel to our regions to explore our world-class tourism and hospitality offerings over the coming months.”

Lonely Planet previously named Hobart one of its ‘Best Travel Cities 2013’ and Tasmania one of its ‘Best Travel Regions 2015’.
