Brisbane Broncos star Ezra Mam could become first player sanctioned by new independent body

Brisbane Broncos star Ezra Mam could become first player sanctioned by new independent body

“I’m not even going to touch on it now,” Maguire said when asked whether Mame’s contract would be renegotiated.

“I’ll have to go through everything; I have to look at where and how he got to this point and evaluate what’s going on and understand him and understand where the organization is.”

Maguire felt there was hope for Mam to restore his reputation.

“I’ve been in the game for a long time and I’ve seen a lot of players go through a lot of different situations,” he said.

“We need to really look at how he ended up in this situation.

“I think what he does going forward is very important.”

Maguire added that the welfare of the crash victims had to be taken into account and did not rule out Ma’am returning to football through the Queensland Cup.

Donaghy said the mum has had a rollercoaster 12 months, during which the 21-year-old received the Clive Churchill Medal from Nathan Cleary in a heartbreaking Brisbane final defeat in 2023, was racially abused by Spencer Leniu in Las Vegas and more recently was involved in an incident with a fan in Bali.

“Obviously he now finds himself in a really difficult and worrying situation,” Donaghy said.

“For us, it’s just working through the process once the facts are known to ensure we don’t make hasty calls.”

Maguire said his first priority would be to set higher standards at the Broncos.

“I think every club has different situations in terms of what’s going on internally,” he said.

“It’s about the people, the character of the club, the character of the people who play a role in what makes the organization successful.”
