A CART that appeared on Wellington Road in early June will finally be refurbished next week after a five-month wait.

The crater, which was created when the surface of Parkland Road broke and collapsed, was closed with cones and barriers by Somerset Council on Monday, June 3, for repairs this week.

The council has confirmed that repairs will take place from 8am on Monday 28 October until 5pm on Friday 1 November.

The road will be partially closed so civil engineering contractor Kier can carry out work to replace existing pipes and restore the “1.5 x 1.5 carriageway void” to surface level, according to the Causeway one.network website.

Having emerged nearly five months ago, the sinkhole remains despite the council saying repairs would be completed “midweek” in the week commencing 3 June.

Somerset Council also launched an investigation into the reasons for the failure, but no clear conclusions were reached.

Local residents complain about traffic jams and the fact that the road has become inaccessible to emergency vehicles.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It’s really annoying because of the traffic. The fire truck can’t get down here.

The installation of road works and closure signs along the sidewalk has also created accessibility issues, residents said.

The municipality has announced that renovations will take place next week from Monday, October 28 at 8am until Friday, November 1 at 5:00pm.

Another anonymous resident said: “These are road signs, not pavement signs, and they block access.

“It looks like a chicane coming here.”

There are a further six small potholes requiring repairs on Parklands Road. There is no indication whether they will be repaired at the same time as scheduled maintenance.

The road will be closed from Monday 28 October for five days and will remain accessible to vehicles from either end, but will be closed along a central 45m section for work. Vehicles will be directed to Howard Road. There will be no pedestrian path closures.

Somerset Council has been contacted for comment.
