The aim of the MIPCOM Cannes Diversify TV Awards is to highlight programs with diverse and inclusive experiences, highlighting genuine new and established voices. Victory follows BAFTA TV Prize, Royal Television Awards and acquisition Netflix earlier this year, with more exciting sales announcements coming soon. Director Andy Mundy-Castle, WHITE NANNY, BLACK CHILD offers intimate, moving and sometimes disturbing reflections on identity, belonging and the nature of family. By order Channel 5 (UK) and co-financed BFI Physicians’ Society FoundationThis powerful film tells the story of more than 70,000 West African children raised informally by white British families between 1955 and 1995. The documentary follows nine adults as they reflect on their parenting experiences, filmed during a therapy retreat.

Director Andy Mundy-Castle won the award at Cannes, with the judges calling it “a fearless production and a unanimous winner.»

Host of awards Femi Okewho has a personal connection to this story shared: “This program spoke to me… When I was six weeks old, my Nigerian parents took me to a British white family in Kent, and they were my foster family for seven years. You can imagine my shock, but in this documentary I met a whole community of people who had similar experiences. This story hits so close to home.»
