Michael Maguire breaks silence on Ezra Mam’s car crash saga, rehab clinic, Brisbane Broncos, Dave Donaghy

New Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire and chief executive Dave Donaghy have refused to rule out the possibility of star midfielder Ezra Mama’s five-year, $4 million contract being terminated following his weekend car accident.

Mum was hospitalized after he was involved in a two-vehicle head-on collision with an Uber driver in Brisbane on Friday night.

The 21-year-old man reportedly tested positive in a roadside drug test, but no charges have been filed.

On Monday evening it turned out that my mother was admitted to a rehabilitation center.

But the situation has left Mame’s future in doubt after Donaghy’s club revealed on Monday that the club had not made any decisions regarding the youngster’s future.

On Michael Maguire’s first official day in charge of the Broncos, the new coach faced tough questions when speaking to the media.

“Obviously when you have to go through things like that it’s always frustrating, but we’re where we are,” Maguire said.

“I need to look around the club and build on what I’m starting to see right now.”

Maguire said he was keen to sit down and try to get to the bottom of some of the club’s “well-documented” problems.

Maguire said he spoke with his mother, but he kept the details of the conversation to himself.

“I need to find out more about what the situation actually entails, but I’ve spoken to him and it’s more about the safety of everyone involved in this situation,” Maguire said.

– I’ll find out the details – I just landed, I won’t talk about it on the phone. But I will definitely find out how one of our players got to this point.”

Asked whether Ma’am would be sacked, Maguire replied: “I’m not even going to touch on that right now.”

Maguire said the mum had to “go through a process with the police, the game and the organization itself”.

However, in a positive sign for Mam, Maguire said he believed the boy could rehabilitate himself.

“People make mistakes, but they also have to own up to them,” Maguire said. “I think what he does going forward is very important.

“I know he’s getting some help at the moment as to where he’s at and once he gets over that I’ll spend some time with him and evaluate everything that’s going on.”

Maguire added that the process “may take quite a long time to get to where we want to be.”

Donaghy also spoke to the media and said the club was “working through the process”.

However, when asked about the possibility of Mame’s contract being terminated, Donaghy refused to rule out the possibility.

“We haven’t talked about it in detail, but it’s obviously a serious matter and we treat it as such,” Donaghy said.

“Once we have all the information, we can move forward and develop the next course of action. But I don’t think it will be a quick process.”

Donaghy was also asked if the mom would get a second chance.

“I’m not going to preempt this process, but what I will say about Ezra is that he’s a very decent person,” Donaghy said.

“I feel like he’s lost his way in these big 12 months.

“When you look back at his performance in the grand final, it was not only career-changing but also life-changing, given how well known he is now.”

Another reporter asked about Maguire being “in a perfect storm” when he started work.

Donaghy said Maguire “hit the ground running” before he even walked through the door, adding that everyone at the club should “support him in maintaining standards”.

The press conference came after people traveling in Uber publicly spoke about their injuries.

Uber driver Marcel van den Camp told 9News Brisbane on Tuesday night he will need help and has been feeling anxious since getting back in the car.

A 64-year-old man told the broadcaster how he managed to save a four-year-old girl who was stuck in a car after the incident.

On Monday evening, it emerged that a female passenger and her young daughter had been hospitalized following the incident.

The mum told the Sydney Morning Herald: “She has a fractured hip. She has very bad burns from the friction of the seat belt.”

Van den Camp said mother and daughter were “shocked to say the least.”

“In the blink of an eye, we were hit by a truck. It was an almighty collapse. I zoned out a little.

“The woman was saying, ‘I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.’ And I said, “Oh my God, I need to do something.” I tried the back door, they were locked. So I went back to my door and reached for the back door on my side. Unblocked it. I pulled the girl out. They were, to put it mildly, very shocked.”

He also showed off a bruise on his torso.

“I will need help to overcome the mental obstacles I am experiencing,” he said.

“Like a little anxiety when I’m sitting in the car.”

He said he has not been contacted by Ma’am or the Broncos.

The mum previously said the NRL club had contacted her but she had not heard from the mum directly.

On Monday evening, Mam’s management released a statement confirming he had sought help.

“Ezra is extremely remorseful,” the statement said.

“He is concerned primarily for the other parties involved and understands the enormity of the current situation.

“He acknowledges that he has faced some personal challenges and has taken the proactive step of seeking immediate professional help following these recent events.

“We will continue to support him throughout this process and will not be making any further comment at this time.”
