Firefighters battle a bushfire on Flaxton Road, Rangiora

The bushfire broke out on Flaxton Road, Rangiora, at 2.20pm today.

A fire and emergency services spokesman said 14 fire engines and two helicopters were on the scene working to extinguish the fire as of 3pm.

Several structures were under threat and one property was evacuated as a precaution.

Authorities said there were several out-of-control fires today and urged the public to avoid starting new fires as strong winds were expected to increase the risk.

Residents were also advised to check any previous fires to ensure they were completely extinguished.

A command post was also set up near the scene of the incident.

Fire and Emergency Services asked people to stay away from the area to allow crews to safely work to control and extinguish the fire.
