Kiggans and Smasal cross the 2nd Congressional District before Election Day

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. With just two weeks until Election Day, Congresswoman Jen Kiggans (R-Virginia) and Missy Cotter Smasal tell News 3 they’re busier than ever.

On Sunday, we spoke with both congressional candidates about the future support they’re receiving and how they’re connecting with swing and independent voters.

One of those supporting Congresswoman Jen Kiggans is Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who appeared with her at a small event at Susan’s Kitchenette in Virginia Beach on Sunday.

Congresswoman Kiggans said other big names have also pledged their support.

“Congressman Tom Emmer will come to us. Congressman Jim Jordan will be coming and then, of course, on election night the governor will be back with Lieutenant Governor Vince Sears and Attorney General Jason Miyares, so we’re looking forward to hosting a lot of important events. guests in the next two weeks,” Kiggans explained.

Later in the day, we spoke with Missy Cotter Smasal, who is running against Kiggans in this race for Congress.

When we asked her what she thought of the governor’s presence at Keaggan’s event, she told us that her rooster also has some big names supporting her

“I’m proud of the support we have,” Smasal said. “We will be joined this week by leader Hakeem Jeffries. I am proud to have the support of former Governor Ralph Northam, as well as Congressman Bobby Scott and our district’s outstanding leaders.”

With just two weeks until the polls open, both candidates told News 3 they’ve been talking to unaffiliated and undecided voters.

“From knocking on doors to community events, talking to whoever is out there, independent voters, Democrats, Republicans, we need as many people as possible,” Kiggans explained. “We feel there are a lot of people who are unhappy with the current direction of the country and we are looking for ways to change that through improving the economy, border security, supporting safer communities and then of course on the national stage. “

Smasal says her team has been talking to people on the coast and in Suffolk.

“A lot of people on the shore this past weekend were talking about the health of the bay and the beaches,” Smasal said. “When I’ve spoken to people in Suffolk, a lot of people are concerned about a good strong local economy helping small businesses here on the beach. The issues are very diverse, but people abroad are just motivated to change and motivated to see someone who is going to focus on them and not on national politics.”

Both Kiggans and Smasal sent messages to voters as the countdown to the November election continues.

“My focus is on coastal Virginia. I think we’ve seen that our current congressman is too focused on party affiliation on national issues. I want to focus here on a strong economy for veterans and military families to protect our rights. Coastal Virginia is what I love and I will always work hard to represent us,” Smasal said.

“I get out of bed every morning to fight for our military, our veterans, our families, our business owners. I am honored to do this and look forward to continuing this great work in Washington,” Kiggans said.
