Dogwatch Sanctuary Trust has launched a pet therapy program in nursing homes in Christchurch.

The former Dogwatch River dog has been providing company to the residents since August.

The program is being run at Essie Summers and Cashmere View Retirement Village and has received positive feedback from both residents and staff.

“I just love seeing River; she reminds me of my dogs and brings back so many happy memories,” says Essie Summers resident Eleanor.

Eleanor, a lifelong dog lover, missed the comfort and companionship of dogs while living in a nursing home.

River’s visits helped fill that void, bringing joy, companionship and companionship to Eleanor and other residents.

River, a Border Collie/Hunter mix, was adopted from Dogwatch in 2022 and quickly became a favorite in nursing homes.

But River’s path to Dogwatch was not easy. She was found wandering the streets of Bromley by Christchurch City Council’s animal control team, severely underweight.

After being left unclaimed at the municipal shelter, she was transferred to Dogwatch, where she initially struggled with the shelter’s environment, frequently barking in frustration.

However, when she met her new family, her true personality emerged.

“River came right up to us when we met her at Dogwatch, wanting some love and a pat,” says Amelia, her adopter.

“She was the best dog and fit into our lives easily.”

The pet therapy program is part of Dogwatch’s commitment to giving back to the community by creating opportunities for dogs and people to enrich each other’s lives.

River’s visits not only bring comfort and smiles, but also spark conversation, with many residents reminiscing about their pets and enjoying the emotional connection that comes from spending time with a dog.
