Christchurch Croquet Club plans open days to help combat loneliness

Recognizing that there are many single people in the area with no immediate family members, Edgeware Croquet Club is holding an open day for people to meet others and try a non-physical sport.

Club president Stu Rich said it was an occasion where people were encouraged to get out of their homes and interact with others.

Rich said he’s found that the lack of knowledge about the game puts some people off, but it’s not a problem.

“The open day for those who have not played before is designed to make it easier for players to get into the game.

“Club members will tell them what they need to learn, and because it is an open day for new players, there is no pressure to compare with experienced players.”

Mallets will be provided for people to come and try.

“Our idea is to provide a seamless opportunity for people to get to know others in a neutral manner, while also finding interests that allow them to find friendship and laughter while enjoying nature,” Rich said.

  • Cub members typically play on Thursdays and Saturdays, but open houses will be held Oct. 24 and 26 starting at 1 p.m. For more information call Sue on 021 251 6998.
