Grand Forks daycare worker charged with child abuse

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Valley News Live) – A child care provider in Grand Forks has been charged with felony child abuse of children under 6 years of age.

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday, October 15th at Hopeful Beginnings in the Grand Cities Mall (1601 17th Avenue South).

According to court documents, 22-year-old Jarae Grad was captured on video throwing the child to the ground. In court documents, she tells investigators she was “upset and angry.”

Another employee took video and told officers that Grad was spitting up the baby “and she felt like the force was excessive” so she started recording, according to court documents.

The video allegedly shows Grad “holding and pushing (the child) up and away from Grad and violently pulling the child backwards.” The video then shows Grad “holding (the child) high off the ground and then forcefully throwing (the child) to the ground” “with such force that her legs were thrown back and her lower torso, thighs and upper legs struck about the ground.” ”

Court documents say Grad told police she “threw and dropped the baby” to get her to stop crying.

In court documents: Daycare director Sarah Schindler says she was not notified of the alleged attack until two days later, on October 17. court documents.

The postoperative care report shows that the child has ear discharge, is unusually irritable and tired, and has a decreased appetite.

Grad made her first appearance in court on Monday, October 21. She is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on 12/2/2024.
