A man has died and 15 others have been taken to hospital after two trains collided with each other on a remote line in Wales.

Emergency services attended the scene near Llanbrynmire, Powys, after a pair of passenger trains collided with each other on the Cambrian Line at 7.29pm.

Officers from Dyfed-Powys Police swarmed the area along with British Transport Police, Welsh Ambulance Service, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and HM Coastguard crew members.

Police confirmed that a man, whose age was not specified, died as a result of the collision.

Another 15 people were taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening or life-altering, police said.

Emergency services swarmed the area shortly after 7:30 p.m.

There are no longer police at the scene and all other passengers were evacuated from both trains and taken home on replacement rail buses.

As a result of the crash, the line between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth was closed.

The main A470 trunk road at Thalerddig was also closed by police, who advised motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes for their journey. It is not expected to open until early Tuesday morning.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman said: “We can confirm that one person has died following a collision between two trains which occurred near Llanbrynmire in Powys this evening.

“As part of a multi-agency response to the incident, officers from Dyfed Powys Police, as well as British Transport Police, Welsh Ambulance Service, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, HM Coastguard and members of the rail industry were called to the railway line shortly before. 19:30.

“Sadly, we can now confirm that a man has died as a result of the collision. His next of kin have been informed and his family is receiving specialist assistance.

“A further 15 people were taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening or life-changing.

“All other passengers have now been evacuated from both trains. Our thoughts are with the people and families involved in this incident.

“Although we are no longer on the scene, we will continue to work with our emergency services colleagues and transit agencies as the investigation into the incident continues.”

The road is closed after two trains collided at low speed on the Cambrian line near Llanbrynmire at 7.29pm.

Network Rail said two trains were in question: the 6.31pm Transport for Wales from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 7.09pm Mackinlleth to Shrewsbury.

Superintendent Andrew Morgan said: “We can sadly say that a man has passed away following an incident this evening.” We extend our deepest sympathies to his loved ones, as well as all others affected, and specialist professionals continue to provide support.”

“British Transport Police, along with our colleagues in the emergency services and the rail industry, are actively working to establish the circumstances that led to this collision. As a result, residents will see an increased police presence in the area in the coming days.”

Network Rail said two trains were involved: the 6.31pm Transport for Wales from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 7.09pm Transport for Wales train from Mackinleth to Shrewsbury.

A witness told Cambrian News several people were injured on board his train and said one person was airlifted to hospital.

He said: “One train stopped and the other train couldn’t stop.

“The driver ran in, sat on a chair and said: “Get ready, we’re going to crash into the train.”

“Someone lost teeth, broke ribs.”

Passengers from both trains were seen boarding replacement buses just after 11pm.

In a joint statement, Network Rail and Transport for Wales said: “Emergency services are responding to an incident near Llanbrynmire in Powys, Mid Wales, involving two trains – the 18.31 Transport for Wales from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and the 19.09 Transport for Wales from Mackinlleth to Shrewsbury.

“The line is closed because they are doing their job. Our top priority is the safety of our passengers and colleagues and we are doing everything we can to support emergency services when responding to an incident.

“We would advise passengers to plan ahead and check journeys before travel through National Rail Inquiries.”

Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan says her thoughts are with those involved in the rail collision.

In a post on X, she said: “My thoughts are with everyone involved in the railway incident in Powys this evening.

“I would like to thank the emergency services for their response and asked that they keep me informed of any developments throughout the night.”
