Apple Watch Series 10 after a month: this is the model against Ultra

I’ve been wearing the Apple Watch Series 10 for a little over a month. And during this time, several key features have emerged that in many ways make this model an anti-Ultra. That’s what I mean.

Series 10 caused an early update

I usually buy a new Apple Watch every two years. But this year the Series 10 forced me to upgrade early. I had a Series 9, which worked well, but a few features of the Series 10 led me to an unexpected purchase:

  • larger display
  • faster charging
  • thinner body
  • wide angle OLED
  • better constant updating

Overall, the Apple Watch Series 10 feature list showed that this year was bigger than usual for the Watch.

A month later, I am absolutely sure that this is true. But I also found that some of the Series 10’s most notable features don’t really stand out that much.

In fact, where the Apple Watch Ultra grabs attention in every possible way, the Series 10 does the opposite. It kind of… just gets out of the way.

The size and thickness of the screen make the model surprisingly thin

Take screen size for example. My 46mm Series 10 has a (barely) larger display than the Apple Watch Ultra 2. But if you look at the two devices side by side, the Ultra shows off its screen size loud and proud, while on the Series 10 it’s hard to even notice. .

When I first started wearing the Series 10, the larger display definitely caught my eye. But after a couple of days it looked like my Series 9.

This is partly due to the fact that the Series 10 lacks Ultra watch faces that take advantage of the larger screen. Ultimately, this is also because the design has been intentionally sleeker and more unattractive.

The Series 10’s thinness helps with that. Its thickness is only 9.7 mm, while the Ultra 2 is 14.4 mm. They have almost the same display size, but one model puts it on display, while the other is more subtle, preferring to go unnoticed.

The not-so-sleek Apple Watch Ultra 2

For the first time in many years, I started wearing a watch while sleeping. If I have sleep apnea, it would be nice to know. And my experience wearing the watch to bed, I think, highlights the huge difference between the Series 10 and Ultra.

Even though the Series 10 has a large screen, it’s so smooth on my wrist that it doesn’t bother me in bed. But I suspect Ultra will definitely do it. I say this in part because some of the bulkier early Watch models did. They had smaller screens, but the thickness was hard to ignore in bed, so I stopped wearing them.

Apple Watch Series 10: Anti-Ultra

After using the Apple Watch Series 10 for a month, I found myself barely thinking about the new watch. Not because the new model isn’t different enough from last year’s. I think this is true. That’s because the Series 10’s design priorities are aimed at getting the device out of the way. This is a health device that you can wear all the time, and when you do, it’s not too noticeable.

In other words, it’s the anti-Apple Watch Ultra. Sleek rather than bulky, casual rather than hardcore. This is not a judgment about which device is better. This is just one way to understand their differences.
