Helen caused $159 million in damage to Virginia agriculture, Virginia Cooperative Extension reports.

Helen’s destruction caused $159.3 million in damage to Virginia agriculture, according to Virginia Cooperative Extension.

Agents from 21 localities worked on the assessment. The Virginia Department of Forestry also provided information on timber losses in the state.

“Agriculture is a critical contributor to the rural economies where these losses occurred,” said Dan Gerlich, Extension associate director for economics, community and food, who led the assessment. “We hope this assessment will help direct resources toward restoring these farms and communities that are so important to Virginia’s economic prosperity.”

Grayson County suffered $61 million in damages. White County, Smith County, Washington County and Carroll County round out the top five communities with the largest economic losses from Helen.
