Free Tronpost for spring gardens

Just in time to plant spring vegetables and get gardens back into shape, the Resource Recovery Council team is giving away a limited amount of free Tronpost on Saturday, November 2nd.

Tronpost is compost produced on site at the Hampton Downs compost plant from Hamilton’s food scraps and green waste.

Hamilton City Council director of operations and maintenance Tanya Herrmann said the Tronpost event promoted the benefits of using a kerbside food waste bin.

“At last year’s event, we gave away 9,000 kg of Tronpost. We are hosting a free Tronpost event again this year to spread the word about how our food scraps are recycled and turned into compost to provide nutrients for gardens,” Hermann said.

Between October 2023 and September 2024, Hamiltonians saved 4,409,000 kg of food waste from going to landfill using kerbside recycling bins. This is equivalent to approximately 735 elephants, up from 3,932,000 kg the previous year.

“The average number of food waste bins we empty has increased from 37% to 38% over the last year, which is great to see. Even a 1% increase could mean more than 400,000kg of food waste would be saved and reused.

“I would love to see more community members use their food waste bins so we can create an even more amazing Tronpost by diverting food waste from the landfill,” Hermann said.

The event meets the goals of the Council Waste management and minimization plan for 2024-2030. reduce the amount entering the waste stream and increase resource recovery.

Participants must bring their own bucket to be filled by the Resource Recovery Team at Tronpost. Bags or cardboard boxes are difficult to handle and will not be accepted. Each person will be able to receive up to 20 liters, with a maximum of 60 liters per vehicle (for vehicles with multiple people).
