New Zealand film Tina tells the moving story of a Samoan teacher after the CHCH earthquake

The trailer for new Kiwi film Tina has officially been released and it promises to be both rewarding and emotional.

The story follows Samoan teacher Maretha Percival (played by Anapela Polataivao) as she navigates life after the tragic death of her daughter in the Christchurch earthquake.

You can immediately feel Mareta’s relationship with her daughter. In one scene, Mareta helps her daughter warm up her singing voice over the phone shortly before her death.

Maretha reluctantly takes on the role of teaching assistant at an elite private school, where she meets a group of students who could really use some guidance, love and a little inspiration.

She finds herself igniting a spark in these kids, pushing them to compete in the Big Sing choir competition, while giving us a laugh along the way.

In addition to Polataivao, the cast includes newcomer Antonia Robinson, Beulah Cole (Hawaii Five-0, Next Goal Wins) and Nicole Whippy (Outrageous Luck, Shortland Street), all written and directed by the talented Miki Magasiva.

The film comes on the heels of its emotional world premiere at the Hawaii International Film Festival.

Miki reflected on the overwhelming love “Tina” has received, saying, “I was overwhelmed by the alofa that Hawaii showed us and will always appreciate the emotional response that celebrated our film – a film shot and set here in New Zealand.” .

“Many of our people gave us their Aroha while making this film,” he added. “They have waited patiently and I can’t wait to finally share this with them and the rest of Aotearoa early next year.

The film’s main standout element is its music, which features a powerful choir led by renowned Tuilagi choirmaster and arranger Dr. Igelese Ete, known for his work on The Lord of the Rings and Disney’s Moana.

Tina will be released in New Zealand cinemas on February 27, 2025.
