New Delhi: In a touching turn of events, Western Australian all-rounder Hilton Cartwright retired mid-innings during the Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania to attend the unexpected birth of his second child. Cartwright, unbeaten on 52*, made the decision to retire during the tea break on day two.

The right-hander, who has previously represented Australia on the international stage, reportedly rushed to the hospital where his wife was admitted, wanting to be by her side during the birth of their second child.

After ensuring the safety and well-being of his wife and newborn, Cartwright reportedly returned to the WACA Ground in Perth, resuming his duties in the ongoing Sheffield Shield match.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Cartwright explained that the timing of the Sheffield Shield match was unexpected due to the birth of their child, adding that it had taken him by surprise.

“My wife Tameka was only 37 weeks pregnant, so the birth of our second child was not expected to affect the match against Tassie, so I decided to play,” Cartwright said.

“She had some complications over the weekend which led to my obstetrician calling me yesterday as I was coming down to earth. She recommended that the best course of action for the safety of mom and baby should be taken in the afternoon.

“Tasmania were made aware of this situation during the break in service.

“We had a plan between myself, the coaches and (Western Australia captain) Sam (Whiteman) where I would need to get away from the stadium during the tea break with the hope of returning to the crease later in the match. innings.”

Western Australia officials were unsure on Monday night whether Hilton Cartwright would return to the field on Tuesday. It was also unclear whether Tasmania and the match referee would allow him to resume serving after quitting mid-match.

However, Cartwright returned to the game after his teammate Cooper Connolly was dismissed. Soon after, his innings came to an end as Riley Meredith dismissed him for a well-scored 65 runs.
