A suspect has been charged and will appear in court after one man was killed and another injured in South Lanarkshire.

Emergency crews received reports of two men seriously injured in the Burnbank Center area of ​​Hamilton at around 3.50pm on Monday.

William Copeland, 36, died at the scene and a 59-year-old man was taken by ambulance to hospital.

A 56-year-old man was arrested during the murder investigation and has now been charged in connection with Mr Copeland’s death and alleged attempted murder.

The suspect is due to appear at Hamilton Sheriff Court later on Wednesday.

Road closures were in place on Whitehill Road and Purdy Street and access to shops in the area was restricted, but this has now been lifted.

Detective Chief Inspector Susie Cairns said: “Our thoughts are with the families of the victims as they try to come to terms with what happened.

“We will continue to increase our police presence in the area as we recognize that incidents such as these can be very upsetting and worrying for people living in the area.
