Wellington Produce Packaging celebrates expansion and 90 years after fire

In Mount Forest, Wellington Produce Packaging has opened a significant extension to its site, built after a devastating fire in June 2023 destroyed the warehouse. The event coincided with celebrations of the firm’s 40th anniversary at its current location on Sligo Road and its 90th year in business. Company president Paul Hinks emphasized the importance of recognizing such milestones when reflecting on the company’s evolution, including its transition from Wellington Wood Products to its current focus on packaging solutions primarily for the agricultural sector.

The company, now shifting its focus to paperboard and plastics, supplies a variety of packaging materials to farmers and manufacturers across Canada, with a particular focus on the Ontario market. Adam Hinks, the third generation in the business, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting Canadian producers, attributing its origins to the abundant raw materials in the Mount Forest region. Despite the setback of a fire that occurred during its busiest month and resulted in significant inventory losses, the company experienced growth, aided by community and competitive support and an efficient insurance claims process.

The newly added 15,000 square feet of space symbolizes not only the restoration but also the expansion of the business. The event attracted the attention of a variety of stakeholders, including representatives from the Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association and the Canadian Corrugated Association, as well as government officials who recognized the company’s sustainability and its role in the agricultural landscape. Wellington North Mayor Andy Lennox praised the company’s success over the years and its contribution to Mount Forest’s identity.
