Lewis Hamilton replaced by Mercedes after failure at US Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton was replaced in Mexican Grand Prix practice by Mercedes following his problems at the United States Grand Prix on Sunday night.

The 39-year-old had a race to forget as the veteran failed to finish after crashing on the gravel.

Hamilton’s time with the Silver Arrows is coming to an end and the Stevenage-born driver is set to join Ferrari next year.

And he will now miss the Mexican Grand Prix as Mercedes decided to replace him in practice with 18-year-old Italian star Kimi Antonelli.

Formula One rules state that each team must give new drivers two opportunities to practice, one in each car.

Antonelli is set to replace Hamilton permanently in 2025 once he packs his bags and heads to his new environment at Ferrari.

Speaking after the US Grand Prix, the Briton admitted that he was disappointed with his performance.

He also criticized Mercedes’ car, blaming his car for not finishing the race.

“Obviously he’s doing a great job today, fortunately, but he’s wearing an old uniform.

“It will be interesting to see if lessons can be learned from this, but it is very frustrating.

“I am very sorry for the entire team at the plant. I don’t think I’ve ever been eliminated from a race before.

“It’s not that I wasn’t focused. I was really caught off guard by my bouncing and obviously I’m devastated.

“I’ll just try to be better prepared for next week. Hopefully next week the car will be in better condition.”

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was also asked about Hamilton’s plight.

And he also blamed the car, not the driver.

The Austrian said: “100 percent car. I don’t think he even insisted at this stage.

“We saw it (in qualifying) with George and maybe it was too strong, but it still suddenly (however) got lost, putting him in the wall. This is the situation today, the wind was blowing and the air was a little dirty.

“We definitely have a problem. I don’t know if yesterday was the same as today. Definitely Lewis Hamilton won’t lose his car this way.”
