Musk warns of censorship during Kamala Harris’ potential presidency

At a rally for Republican candidate Donald Trump in Pennsylvania on October 19, tech billionaire Elon Musk warned that a Kamala Harris presidency could usher in a massive crackdown on free speech in the United States. The CEO of Tesla and X (formerly Twitter) expressed concern about a potential Harris administration, calling it a “big government machine” that would prioritize censorship under the guise of combating disinformation. Musk’s remarks underscored his evolving political views and deepening participation in US political discourse, especially as the 2024 presidential election approaches.

Musk’s criticism of Kamala Harris revolves primarily around what he sees as her administration’s potential suppression of free speech. “We will see more censorship under a kind of Kamala regime,” Musk said. He called Harris “just a puppet,” arguing that her administration would represent the interests of the bureaucracy rather than the will of the people. “If the teleprompter breaks, she won’t know what to say,” Musk added, implying that Harris lacks true leadership and autonomy and is acting more like a figurehead for the vast government system.

One of Musk’s key concerns is his continued focus on combating so-called disinformation, which he argues is often a pretext to control narratives and suppress dissent. “It is clear that there is strong support for censorship under the guise of fighting disinformation. But disinformation is actually a propaganda word,” Musk said. His arguments are based on the idea that labeling information as false or misleading is inherently subjective and dangerous when controlled by the government. “Who will decide what disinformation is? Government? This is crazy,” Musk said, arguing that no government body should have the power to dictate what constitutes acceptable speech.

Musk’s warnings about censorship under Harris are rooted in her past actions regarding online speech and content moderation. As vice president, Kamala Harris has made it clear that she believes social media platforms have a responsibility to combat harmful content. In June 2022, she led the creation of the White House Task Force to Combat Online Harassment and Abuse, specifically targeting online harassment against women and the LGBTQ community. The task force’s goal was to hold platforms accountable for their role in spreading harmful speech and misinformation, Harris said.

Moreover, Harris has been vocal about her dissatisfaction with the way social media platforms manage content, calling them purveyors of “hate” and “misinformation.” In 2019, Harris insisted that social media companies be held accountable for the spread of harmful content, a position that earned her praise from advocates for stricter internet regulation and criticism from free speech absolutists such as Musk.

In addition to concerns about government censorship, Musk also took aim at the broader media landscape, accusing legacy media of acting as propaganda machines. “In fact, in the US, people are starting to realize that legacy media is just a propaganda machine,” Musk said, noting that American audiences are becoming increasingly skeptical of mainstream news outlets. According to Musk, more people are rejecting the traditional media narrative, and he sees this as a positive development. “European audiences still believe the news is real,” he added, suggesting that American news consumers are becoming more discerning than their European counterparts.

Musk’s distrust of the media reflects a growing sentiment among certain segments of the population, especially conservatives and independents, who believe the mainstream media is biased or untrustworthy. His assertion that Americans are becoming aware of media manipulation fits with a broader trend of disillusionment with established news sources, which many view as serving specific political agendas rather than impartial reporting.

Although Musk has previously positioned himself as a politically neutral person, he has increasingly aligned himself with Donald Trump and the Republican Party. During a rally in Pennsylvania, Musk reiterated his support for Trump, calling the claim that Trump is a “danger to democracy” both “bizarre and hypocritical.” Musk highlighted what he sees as a fundamental contradiction in the way the political establishment has treated Trump and President Joe Biden. He criticized Biden’s withdrawal from the race, calling it “incredibly undemocratic” even though Biden is technically still running for re-election.

Musk’s support for Trump follows an assassination attempt on the former president in July, after which Musk publicly supported Trump’s campaign. The tech billionaire has since donated tens of millions of dollars to Trump’s re-election efforts. In return, Trump promised to create a new government position created specifically for Musk: a “cost cutting secretary,” reflecting Trump’s admiration for Musk’s business acumen and his effectiveness in cutting costs.

Musk’s warning that the Harris-led government is suppressing free speech is part of a broader debate about content moderation and freedom of expression in the digital age. As social media platforms come under increasing scrutiny for their role in spreading misinformation, many are advocating for stricter rules to curb harmful content. But Musk and other free speech advocates argue that these efforts often go too far, stifling legitimate discourse and allowing the government to overreach.

If Harris becomes president in November, the trajectory of her administration’s approach to online speech will be closely watched. Her track record suggests she will continue to advocate for greater regulation of technology platforms, especially regarding misinformation and harmful content. However, as Musk noted, who defines disinformation and who has the power to regulate speech remains a controversial issue.

In a political environment where free speech is increasingly at the forefront of national debate, the tension between protecting the public from harmful content and preserving open discourse is likely to be a defining feature of the next administration, regardless of the election outcome. For Musk and his supporters, the stakes couldn’t be higher as they fear a Harris presidency could usher in a new era of censorship in the United States.
